Get friends, partners or colleagues together for mixed basketball in Sydney. SSB runs organised adult mixed competitions across the Inner West, Redfern, Arncliffe and Parramatta, with options for beginners through to experienced teams.

Compare mixed basketball locations

Choose a location you can get to regularly, then compare the playing standard for your preferred night. These are the competition options listed on our venue pages; check each page for current divisions and season information.

  • Marrickville — Tuesday and Thursday: Learners & Friends at Marrickville High School. A lower-pressure option for beginners, returning players and social groups, with a 10-point scoring limit per player.
  • Leichhardt — Monday, Wednesday and Thursday: Monday is Learners & Friends. Wednesday and Thursday are standard mixed competitions without the Learners & Friends scoring limit. The venue offers options for developing and lower-grade teams at Sydney Secondary College Leichhardt.
  • Redfern — Monday, Tuesday, Wednesday and Sunday: mixed basketball at the National Centre of Indigenous Excellence. Compare the night’s divisions for intermediate, developing and beginner-level teams.
  • Arncliffe — Tuesday and Thursday: mixed competitions at Arncliffe Youth Centre, with Grade 1/2, Grade 3 and Grade 4 listed. Worth considering for experienced mixed teams as well as developing teams.
  • Parramatta CBD — Tuesday: mixed basketball at Arthur Phillip High School, with divisions spanning intermediate through lower-grade and novice teams.

Find the right playing standard

Grade 1 is our highest standard. Grades 2 and 3 suit experienced, intermediate and developing teams, while Grades 4 and 5 cater for lower-grade, newer and recreational teams. Divisions may combine grades depending on the competition.

If most of your group is new to organised basketball, start with our beginner guide and the Learners & Friends options. More experienced players can join friends in Learners & Friends, but the scoring limit helps keep games balanced. For a standard mixed competition, choose a grade that reflects your whole team’s experience. Your preferred division is considered during grading but cannot be guaranteed.

How mixed games work

Mixed teams must have at least two men and two women on court during play. Men are not permitted to block women’s shots at the basket. Read the mixed competition bylaws linked from your chosen venue page for the full rules.

Mixed games, including Learners & Friends at Marrickville and Leichhardt, have two 17-minute running-clock halves and generally take approximately 40–45 minutes.

In Learners & Friends, each player can contribute up to 10 points to the team score per game. They can continue playing after reaching that limit, but their further points do not count. This limit does not apply to standard mixed competitions.

What SSB provides

We aim to provide two referees and a dedicated bench staff member for each game. Teams never have to do bench duty. Individual points, rebounds, steals, assists and blocks are recorded on player profiles. All players must be at least 18 and maintain an active Annual Player Registration.

How teams and individual players can join

Entering a team: organise a group that can meet the mixed on-court requirements, select your preferred competition and complete Team Registration. Include your team’s experience and preferred grade. If the competition is full, check its waitlist options; entry is not guaranteed.

Looking for a team: use the Team & Player Finder to connect with teams recruiting players. Include your preferred locations, nights and experience. A suitable team place depends on availability and cannot be guaranteed.
